What She Said…

What She Said…
She said, “It’s not a big thing.
The other day I happened to be in Switzerland.
I made chili and it turned out badly for lack of spice,
But I have seen the vineyards and I have crossed oceans
And I have seen diamonds that can split the light.”
And I have only stood in awe of her.
She said, “It’s really nothing.
The time I spent in Shanghi with the rows of tanks
Of fresh fish and even octopi.
I have seen the faces of some laughing and some crying
And in a child’s eyes I have seen wonder and delight.”
And I was swept away by her.
She said, “Anyone could have done it.
In Sydney, I stood by their opera house and listened
Not to music from the stages but of all the voices
Of the people simply living as they passed me by.
And the music their lives made sang out to me.”
And I swayed to her life’s lovely melody.
She said, “You could do it.
You can see the snows in Greenland.
You could view the Celtic crosses on the Emerald Isle.
You could write a sonnet from the lyrics that your heart hears
When you stand where Lewis stood, if you wanted to.”
And I don’t know if I could be as brave as she, but she makes me want to be.
