What is it that keeps us

Just out of reach

Arms lengthing each other

Got to keep our space

Just near enough to touch the surface

Just close enough

Graze skin, note eye color

Never say the words

If I say the words then that makes me

Responsible

If I pony up and ante up then I am

Responsible

And you are worthy

Of a response

And what if I can’t

What is this fear I feel

Just a thin layer over me

It’s like cellophane

You can see through it

But I can’t feel

And I can’t breathe

Guilt leaves me breathless

Fear leaves me motionless

Never say the words

If I say the words then I can

Break

If I just speak up, if I step up then you can

Break

And you are fragile then

Breakable

And I don’t want to hurt you or be hurt

So don’t say the words
